Roadways ADB aid to upgrade national highway network programmes Our Bureau
Kolkata , Sept. 16 THE Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide $1 million under its technical assistance grant scheme to help improve India's national highway network programme, according to informed sources. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will execute the technical assistance (TA). The Union Government will be contributing $2,50,000 equivalent towards the TA's total cost of $1.25 million. The two projects, to be financed by the ADB, will each cover about 1,000 km of roads. The roads to be selected will be part of the 10,000-km of national highways being covered under the Prime Minister's National Highway Development Programme, aimed at promoting trade and reducing regional disparities. The NHDP was launched in 1998 with the objective of rehabilitating and widening 13,300 km of roads. Of this, 6,000 km of roads have already been completed. The ADB has so far provided four loans to support the programme, the sources added.
