Hardware `Long way to go in hardware' Our Bureau
New Delhi , Sept. 16 THE IT and Communications Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, today stressed on the need for a series of corrective steps to put manufacturing sector on higher growth path. "There are reports of manufacturing units closing down due to increasing competition from imports, foreign direct investors preferring China, Malaysia and Singapore than India," Mr Maran said at an award function here. He said while India had done extremely well in the software sector, it still had a long way to go in the hardware sector. "We have to improve our infrastructure and bring them up to the world standard to compete with countries like Malaysia, China and Taiwan.," he said. Regretting that over a period of time, the research and development in the area of electronics was decreasing, he said, "Indian electronic hardware industry is waking up to the realities of international competition and is presently under a lot of pressure for survival." India is a signatory to the Information Technology Agreement, he said adding that "IT and telecom hardware industry will be under a zero duty regime from the year 2005."
