Politics Judicial inquiry into Anantapur violence Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept. 17 THE State Cabinet on Friday decided that a judicial inquiry under a retired High Court judge would probe the violence perpetuated by faction leaders in Anantapur district from 1989 to 2004. Speaking to newspersons following the Cabinet meeting, the Minister for Information, Mr Mohammed Ali Shabir, said that the judicial probe is sought to be completed in three months. The terms of reference of the enquiry are yet to be formulated. However, he said that the enquiry commission would also examine whether police protection sought by faction leaders should be extended to them even though they were involved in various crimes. The Cabinet has also decided to constitute committees at the municipal, district and State levels and appoint an IAS officer in-charge of each district to identify non-notified slums through a consultative process and ensure that a minimum of 40 per cent of the funds allocated to the urban local bodies is spent on the development of notified and non-notified slums in their respective areas. The Minister said that slum development works were being undertaken in the State under the Rs 1,400-crore, World Bank-aided AP Urban Reform Municipal Services Project. The decisions of the Cabinet included restructuring of the Labour Department for ensuring effective administration and making officers accountable for their actions. The restructuring envisages, apart from other aspects, increase in the number of posts of Joint Commissioner of Labour from the existing three to nine, that of Deputy Commissioner Labour from the eight to 25 and that of Assistant Commissioner of Labour from 35 to 59. There would not be any additional burden to the State Exchequer on account of the restructuring. On the other hand, it would result in a nominal saving of Rs 8.74 lakh per annum, he said.
