Rlys will not be privatised: Lalu

Gudur , Sept. 17

THE Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, has assured that the Railways would not be privatised.

Addressing a gathering at Nellore here on Friday, he said he would not allow the Railways to be privatised.

The Minister, accompanied his deputy Mr R. Velu and his wife Ms Rabri Devi, had participated in a series of programmes along the Tirupati-Bitragunta stretch.

He opened the renovated railway station at Srikalahasti and Venkatagiri. At Gudur, he dedicated to the nation doubling and electrification works along the Renigunta-Gudur stretch covering a length of 83 km. The works were taken up at a cost of Rs 133 crore.

At the well-attended Nellore meeting, he said safety, providing connectivity to remotest areas and passenger convenience were his priorities.

He said an express train would be introduced between Gudur and Hyderabad. An announcement in this regard would be made in Parliament, he said.

He listed out various measures initiated by his Ministry for Andhra Pradesh in the recent Railway Budget with a layout of Rs 369 crore

He said the decision to introduce khullars (earthen cups) was aimed at providing employment opportunities to lakhs of people.

He warned the Railway officials that any violation of his orders would be severely dealt with.

Stating that cleanliness was his priority, he said his Ministry would shortly introduce the technique in aeroplanes to `close' toilets. The outlets of toilets would not be opened onto the tracks.

He said three top zones that excelled in safai activity would be given prizes.

On the safety front, he said he wound ensure that there would be no accidents. "Unlike in Nitish Kumar's regime where accidents were the order of the day, we will ensure that there will not be any accidents," he said.

Ms Panabaka Lakshmi, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and who represents the Nellore Lok Sabha constituency and many local leaders submitted a number of memorandums to Mr Lalu Prasad, appealing him to develop the railway network in these parts.
