`Newspapers have come back strongly fighting against odds'

Coimbatore , Sept. 20

NEWSPAPERS have made a strong comeback after a tough decade marked by economic recession, newsprint price crisis, new competitive challenges from cable and satellite broadcasting and the changes provoked by the rapid growth of the Internet.

The global press industry is far from approaching any end. It is very much alive and robust and clearly in renaissance, said the Joint Managing Director of The Hindu group, Mr. N. Murali, on Monday.

Delivering a lecture on `Emerging media scene, Challenges and opportunities' at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham at Ettimadai near here, Mr Murali said many newspaper companies were reinventing themselves to deal with challenges, and the indications were positive.

"While the Internet is a threat to newspaper revenue streams, it is also a potential. There is a need to acknowledge and respect the new challenges by turning the possible threat into a resource for new activities and new income."

While the media world is becoming more fragmented, the competitive edge of newspapers becomes more visible. The credibility of a newspaper, its traditions and trust in the market and its relationship with readers and advertisers become more important and is a valuable asset in times of confusion.

When it comes to reach, no other single medium comes close to delivering what newspapers can offer, he added.
