New Zealand woos Indian students

Our Bureau

Chennai , Sept. 20

INDIAN students graduating with a New Zealand degree have the option to find work for two years after completion of the degree and also apply for permanent residence, according to Mr Peter Hobbs, Trade Commissioner in New Delhi, New Zealand High Commission.

Mr Hobbs was talking to Business Line at the New Zealand Education Fair 2004 here, which showcased the opportunities offered by education institutions in New Zealand.

Mr Hobbs said that New Zealand is a safe and multicultural society that welcomes students from various countries. In the last four years, over 4,000 Indian students have studied in New Zealand.

He said that in the coming years, there is expected to be a shortage of certain skill sets, especially in life sciences and in all streams of engineering. Students in these streams could find jobs easily. In the services segment, the tourism industry is expected to offer opportunity of study and employment.

The 20 institutions, which are part of the fair, are all members of the India Education Export Network. These institutions offer courses of study accredited by the New Zealand's mandatory Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International students.
