Australia threatens to withdraw from series, says BCCI counsel

Mumbai , Sept. 20

CRICKET Australia has threatened to pull out of the four-test series against India slated to begin on October 6, as broadcast rights are still not in place, Mr K.K. Venugopal, Counsel for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), told the Bombay High Court today.

Mr Venugopal told the Division Bench of Bombay High Court comprising the Chief Justice, Mr D.C. Bhandari, and Mr Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud, that a speedy decision was imperative in view of the Australian cricket board's plan to withdraw from the Test series.

He submitted to the court the copies of the letter from Cricket Australia written to BCCI threatening to pull out of the series if the telecast does not take place. He said that broadcasters would require at least two weeks to get their act together for a live telecast. Mr Venugopal told the court that BCCI would be inclined to cancel the tender process and call for a fresh bid for telecast of cricket matches in the event there is a delay in arriving at a judgment.
