Private sand mining opposed in Kerala

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Matsya Thozhilali Federation affiliated to the CITU as also the Kerala State Council of the AITUC have voiced their strong opposition to the grant of `No Objection Certificate' to a private group for taking up mineral sand mining off the Arattupuzha coast.

In separate statements here, the two organisations came down heavily on the decision and declared that the move would be opposed at all costs.

The Matsya Thozhilali Federation expressed the fears that sand mining would force the fish shoals to move away from hundreds of square metres of area off the Arattupuzha coast. It would also compromise the life cycle of different fish species.
