Mumbai , Sept. 22 MR Prakash Lal Tandon, the first Indian Chairman of Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL), passed away on Monday in Pune after a prolonged illness. He was 93 and is survived by two sons and a daughter. Remembering Mr Tandon, the HLL Chairman, Mr M.S. Banga, said, "Prakash was a truly visionary leader. He could always see the future and was able to help others see it as well. He, of course, made a very significant contribution to HLL. Even more, he will be remembered for his contribution to the world of Indian management and thinking." Former HLL chairman Dr Ashok Ganguly, too, while remembering Mr Tandon, said that he was a legend in his time. "He established standards and norms for corporate conduct, governance and social conduct that have now become popular and fashionable around the world." "Like any other legend, with the passage of time, new leaders emerge but the standards of performance left behind by Prakash Tandon continue to guide several generations after him through the years and hopefully will continue to do so in the future as well," Dr Ganguly said. Mr Tandon was the first Indian to be appointed as a director on the board of HLL on October 13, 1956. Thereafter, he became the first Indian vice-chairman of the company in 1960 and led it between 1961 and 1968 as the chairman. After an early retirement from the services of the company, Mr Tandon was associated with the State Trading Corporation, Punjab National Bank and the NCAER in senior positions. Mr Tandon was a chartered accountant by profession from the University of Manchester.
