Plea for Nilambur-Nanjangud line

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Health Minister, Mr K.K. Ramachandran Master, urged the Union Railway Minister to revive the Nilambur-Nanjangud railway line project.

In a memorandum submitted to the visiting Union Minister here, Mr Ramachandran Master stated that the line was of vital importance for several reasons. The Railways could assure itself of heavy goods traffic from the plantations from the immediate hinterland — Kodagu in Karnataka, Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu and Wayanad in Kerala. It would also benefit from the proposed container terminal and the LNG project in Kochi.

According to the Minister, the cost of the project could be brought down if the alignment, as proposed now, could be straightened out. The tourist and pilgrim centres of the three contiguous States would also benefit from the line, he added.
