Praful Patel to meet AAI union over mass leave threat

New Delhi , Sept. 23

THE Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, will be meeting the leaders of the Airports Authority of India Joint Forum (AAIJF) in Mumbai on Saturday to nip their threat of going on a day's mass casual leave across the country, in protest against the Government's move to modernise and restructure the airports in Delhi and Mumbai.

Speaking to Business Line, the AAIJF Convenor, Mr M.K. Ghoshal, said it would be incorrect to say that the Forum was against the proposed modernisation plans of the Government.

"We are not against the modernisation programme. However, we want the Government to entrust the proposed modernisation of the airports to us and also consider the alternative plan, which has been given to them already. Besides, we should also be involved in the development of other airports," Mr Ghoshal said. The Forum's alternative plan was submitted to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, earlier.

When asked whether the Forum would withdraw the one-day mass casual leave call, if the talks in Mumbai were successful, Mr Ghoshal said that this was something, which will have to be seen at a later stage.

The proposed one-day protest is likely to include all sections of the employees of Airports Authority of India (AAI), except for air traffic controllers.
