Telecommunications LG plans R&D facility for GSM phones Thomas K. Thomas
New Delhi , Sept. 26 KOREAN electronics major LG is exploring the possibility of setting up a research and development (R&D) facility in India, exclusively for customising its global system for mobile communications (GSM) handsets. The company has charted out an aggressive marketing and distribution strategy with an aim to get 18 per cent of the new handsets market by next year. LG is also in talks with mobile service providers to bundle or co-brand the handset with a connection. LG, so far, has been dominating the code division multiple access (CDMA) handsets market, riding on a tie-up with Reliance Infocomm, wherein it has already shipped in five million handsets. Mr Sandeep Sachdeva, Regional Manager, Mobile Phones, LG Electronics India Pvt Ltd, told Business Line: "We are undertaking a multi-pronged strategy to make inroads into the GSM handset market." He added: "This includes launching new feature-rich handsets at low price points, increasing our reach and widening our distribution network."
