Tourism ISKCON going ahead with theme park in Tirupati K. V. Kurmanath
Hyderabad , Sept. 27 THE International Society for Krishna Consciousness plans to set up a religious theme park at Tirupati. It will be part of the Rs 20-crore Tirupati Visitors Zone and will depict religious, cultural and historical events of the country. The theme park will also comprise miniature models of top Indian temples. An agreement with the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, which was to be signed in June, has been delayed. But a senior APTDC official told Business Line that the project was very much on. The international Hare Krishna organisation proposes to set up a similar theme park in Karnataka. The plan envisages a 63-acre India Heritage Tourism Park on the outskirts of Bangalore. The Tirupati religious theme park is part of the corporation's plan to tap the huge heritage tourism potential in Tirupati, which houses some globally known Buddhist and Shaivite sites in the State. The corporation is working on several projects in the State to cash in on the popular tourist sites. The Rs 8.75-crore Sriparvata Arama at Nagarjunasagar is one such project. This Buddhist theme park will depict the life of Buddha and Nagarjuna and throw light on the Ikshavaku dynasty. Besides the replicas of important stupas from different countries, the park will have a sculptural depiction of the Jataka tales. Similarly, the Rs 2.10-crore Amaravati Interpretation Centre will display the art and culture during the Satavahana dynasty. The corporation official said the project would be completed by the end of 2005. The official said the corporation, which was once considered a `white elephant', eyes revenues to the tune of Rs 148.75 crore by 2008-09. For the current financial year, it targets revenues of Rs 66.87 crore.
