Effluent trigger ruled out in Thiruvananthapuram beach

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Focussed investigations into the `red tide bloom' that defaced large streches of beachfront in coastal Thiruvananthapuram earlier this month have ruled out industrial effluents as a possible trigger for the phenomenon.
The Chemical Sciences division of the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) here carried out the detailed survey, an official spokesman said. According to CESS, effluents from Travancore Titanium Products (TTP) factory on the seaward side could not possibly have played a role in the phenomenon since they are acidic in nature. Initial assessments had indicated that the factory effluents could have contributed to the condition.
The latest findings also indicated that upwelling caused the red tide to extend to an area covering 10 km into the sea. The upwelling may have brought an abnormally high amount of nutrients to the surface.
Together with the sewage washed out to sea from the coastal areas, it created conditions ideal for the red plankton bloom, the spokesman said.
