`Mining hits women hard'

MINING often undermines the rights of women and they are worse hit than men in the aftermath of indiscriminate exploitation of the mineral resources by the industry, Ms. K. Bhanumathi, of mines, minerals and PEOPLE (m, m&P), has said.
m,m&P is an alliance of tribal groups and organisations working in mining areas and tribal lands.
Ms Bhanumathi was briefing the press here on Tuesday about the third International Women and Mining Conference to be organised here from October 1 for nine days at Hotel Punnami Resorts at Rushikonda.
She said that the conference would try to throw light on mining from a gender perspective, analyse the role of women in mining struggles across the globe and participation and right to decision-making. Seventy women from 25 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and the US would participate in the meet.
Privatisation of the mining industry was accentuating the plight of women who were being pushed into the unorganised sector, she said. They were working in highly exploitative working conditions. Persistent attempts were also being made to exploit the mineral resources in the tribal tracts of the country.
"For the past decade or so, the vested interests are trying to revoke the protection given to lands in tribal areas under the Fifth Schedule in the Constitution. The industry wants to have a free run of the tribal territory,'' she alleged.
