SAIL trying to keep SSP divestment alive, say unions

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , Sept. 29

SAIL is trying to keep alive the issue of divestment of Salem Steel Plant (SSP) by extending the validity of Jindal Strips Ltd's price bid by three months, according to the Save Salem Steel Committee.

The umbrella forum of the united SSP employees' unions has alleged that SAIL's decision endorses the previous Government's Cabinet decision on divestment of the plant.

In a communication addressed to the Union Steel Minister, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, the committee has drawn his attention to the common minimum programme of the UPA Government, which assures that no profit-making public sector undertaking (PSU) would be privatised and promises to concentrate on reviving economically viable PSUs.

This assurance was conveyed to the SSP workers and employees by the Minister himself, when he visited the plant in July.

The committee urged the Minister to initiate urgent steps to reverse the previous Government's Cabinet decision and nullify SAIL's attempt to revalidate Jindal's price bid.
