Development of transport sector high on KCCI agenda

Mangalore , Sept. 29

THE Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) seems to be giving high priority for the development transport sector in Mangalore.

Expansion of the New Mangalore Port, development of the Old Mangalore Port into a general cargo port and the construction of a second runway at the Mangalore airport are high on its agenda for 2004-05.

The KCCI President, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, told presspersons here on Wednesday that all efforts would be made to pursue these matters with the authorities concerned.

KCCI would request the Government for the development of additional berths at the New Mangalore Port to cater to the needs of the export sector.

Asked about the KCCI's stand on railway connectivity, he said it would request the State Government to release Rs 60 crore for the early completion of the Mangalore-Hassan broad gauge conversion.

Since the Mangalore railway station is catering to the huge traffic in the region, the chamber will make a representation for the merger of Mangalore station with the South-Western Railway zone and seek the creation of a separate Mangalore railway division.

Mr Rao urged the Government to rename the Kankanady Railway station in Mangalore as Mangalore Junction and Mangalore railway station as Mangalore Central.

He said the construction of a second runway at Mangalore Airport could help operate international flights from the region. The Airports Authority of India is finalising the tender for the construction of a new runway at Mangalore Airport.

Suggesting the need for locating the new terminal building of the airport at the south-western tip of the runway, he said it will reduce the distance of the airport from Mangalore city by eight km.

Mr Rao said the KCCI would forward a proposal to the Government to make Mangalore-Hassan-Bangalore National Highway into a six-lane one.
