No consensus yet on staff mobility, says IBA

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Sept. 30

FIVE workmen unions and four officers' associations involved in the wage revision talks have called for an industry-wide strike on October 5 and 6, 2004.

Mobility of staff and computerisation and technological upgradation are two of the core issues, among others, on which consensus is yet to emerge in arriving at a settlement, said a press release.

According to Mr V.P. Shetty, Chairman & Managing Director, UCO Bank who is also presently the Deputy Chairman of IBA and Chairman of the Negotiating Committee of IBA, once an amicable understanding is reached on these issues satisfying the requirements of the banks, the monetary part of the settlement on which IBA has shown flexibility, could be discussed and finalised, the release said.

The insistence of the unions on a minimum offer of 12.25% increase to resume negotiations is posing a hurdle on the way to an early settlement of wage revision.

Quoting Mr Shetty, the release said, IBA believed in an amicable negotiation of issues involved and arriving at an early settlement. The process should not be derailed by resorting to agitations, which would only delay the common outcome of early settlement desired by both the parties. Strike or any other agitational action would only greatly inconvenience the customers and the general public.

Mr H.N. Sinor, Chief Executive, IBA, said, "We are confident that unions are mature enough to appreciate the issues involved in proper perspective and desist from any action which would inconvenience the customers and the general public."
