TN SSI policy to focus on rehabilitation

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Sept. 30

TAMIL NADU will announce a SSI policy soon, the Small Industries Secretary, Mr D. Rajendran, has said.

Briefing presspersons here today, Mr Rajendran assured that it would be the most comprehensive package available with policy support, credit support and marketing support. "Besides this, we are also trying to focus on rehabilitation package," he said.

According to Mr Rajendran, about 37 per cent of the 4.75 lakh SSI units in the State had turned sick and the Government was keen to extend support to bail them out. The sickness was mostly due to lack of demand, inadequate working capital and lack of marketing support.

A survey undertaken by the Industries Department showed that 70 per cent of the sick units were forced to down shutters because of lack of demand, while 48 per cent did not have adequate working capital to sustain and survive in a competitive environment.

Earlier, at a CII interactive session, Mr Rajendran categorically stated that the future for all SSIs was only in a `cluster approach'. "We have sent 7 proposals to the Centre and four of these have been considered. The cluster proposals included the Tirupur Cluster Project, Pumps and Motors Cluster, Auto Ancillary cluster, Printing Cluster, Fruit Pulp Manufacturing cluster etc. In all this, Supply Chain Management (SCM) will be a very vital component," he added.

The Government was providing Grant support of Rs 50 lakh under the Rural Cluster Development programme (for diagnostic study). The 2005-06 programme for the SSIs was under active consideration of the Government, he said and called upon the CII members to associate themselves with the department.
