A view of the Harrisons Hotel in Chennai. Bijoy Ghosh
Chennai, Sept. 30 HARRISONS, the 100-year-old hospitality brand and part of old Madras, is set to open again as a boutique hotel on October 8. The project is a 50:50 venture between Mr P. Hariraj, the proprietor, and Mr Sunny Pokala, an NRI, who is the Chairman and CEO of the Amtex Group of companies, New York. The new hotel is built on the site of the old one and now has nine floors with 40 rooms, three restaurants, a bar, two banquet halls and one small hall for parties. There is also a small business centre and a health club. The tariff will be Rs 1,800 for a double room and Rs 1,500 for a single. The hotel will revive its old restaurant brands, Dynasty, which serves Chinese food, and Meenam, for South Indian cuisine. Mr Hariraj said they had decided to go with these brands as they had a lot of brand equity in the city. The third restaurant will be Eden, a popular Chennai restaurant for vegetarian continental cuisine. The hotel will have about 200 covers, altogether. Mr Pokala said that the hotel is positioned as a `home away from home', with personalised service and care. The company also has service apartments, which are available on request for larger groups and for longer stay. Mr Pokala said that he planned to invest in four more properties - two in Chennai and two in other cities in the south by 2007. The other two hotels would be on the East Coast Road to cater to the needs of the IT and IT-enabled services industry.
