Left parties' stand on reforms flayed

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Oct. 1

DR Ashok S. Ganguly, Chairman of ICICI OneSource Ltd and Director on the RBI board, has criticised the Left parties' stand on reforms.

Delivering the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Lecture on `Emerging issues and future legacies' here on Friday, Dr Ganguly found flaws in the Left stand. Some vested interests that thrived on the licence raj were also opposed to the reforms process.

The lecture was organised by Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI).

Dr Ganguly said it was not correct to blame technological advances for the woes of the farmers. Criticising politicians for blaming technology, he felt that this kind of attitude was dangerous.

Speaking on the challenges, he said a severe water problem was looming. There was an immediate need to revive the Water Mission set up by late Rajiv Gandhi. It was a national crisis in the making, he pointed out.

While population explosion posed problems to the country, there is scope to tap the huge talent pool. He, however, called for bolstering education system and research activity.

"Expecting State to provide everything is not practical. Non-government organisations and public-private partnerships had a role in this," he felt.

He also regretted erosion of research and development activity in universities over a period of time.
