Thrissur , Oct. 2 THE Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, paid rich tributes to Prof K.N. Raj on his 80th birthday saying, "For my generation of economists, he was himself an institution." In a message read out at a seminar organised in honour of Prof Raj, the Prime Minister said he had the privilege of being invited to join the faculty of the Delhi School of Economics in 1969, when Prof Raj was the Vice Chancellor. He recalled, "As early as 1951, when Prof Raj was all of 27 years of age, Panditji (Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru) had invited him to help in the drafting of the First Five Year Plan. He led a band of deeply committed patriotic and highly talented scholars at Delhi school and contributed greatly to the institution's international reputation. I had the privilege of knowing Prof Raj for over four decade now." Dr Manmohan Singh signed off his letter saying, "I admired Prof Raj's decision to move away from Delhi and set up the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) in Thiruvananthapuram.
