Outsourcing Government - Politics Nasscom hails veto of anti-outsourcing legislation Moumita Bakshi
New Delhi , Oct. 2 NASSCOM has expressed happiness over the move by the Californian Governor, Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger, to veto certain legislation that attempted to prevent outsourcing of jobs to foreign countries. "We are awaiting specific details, but we are happy about the development," the Nasscom President, Mr Kiran Karnik, told Business Line here on Thursday. Mr Karnik said Nasscom always maintained that outsourcing helped both sides. "The US industry has recognised this... There have been a lot of academic studies showing the same. Now the policy-makers are also recognising the mutual benefits," Mr Karnik said. Mr Schwarzenegger vetoed the legislation claiming that the measures would erect "artificial barriers" to economic growth. "There is a right way and a wrong way to expand economic opportunity in California," he said in a statement on one of the three vetoed bills. "The wrong approach is to implement measures that restrict trade, invite retaliation or violate the US Constitution or our foreign trade agreements." The vetoes were immediately praised by the Republicans and the California Chamber of Commerce, which called the legislation "job killers." The three anti-outsourcing bills would have barred state and local governments from contracting workoutside the country.Mr Karnik hoped that the move was "an indication for the future."
