Govt mulls using new software in crime investigation

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 2

THE Government is considering the introduction of software that would enable tamper-proof video and audio recording of statements of witnesses to improve the criminal investigation system,

The Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mr Kapil Sibal, told reporters: "The first meeting of all the stakeholders including representatives of police, lawyers, scientists and judiciary will be held on November 7.

The value that should be given to such recordings has to be decided by authorities concerned, he added.

The software, when developed, would give a boost to the criminal investigation system in the country by strengthening its foundation, as it would do away with lies and fraudulent witnesses, he said.

He also proposed setting up of a system for real time recordings of court proceedings. For this, a national centre might be set up which would store all the recordings, the Minister added.
