Airlines DGCA set to look closer at international airlines' practices Our Bureau
New Delhi , Oct. 3 FARES offered by international airlines and trade practices adopted in the country by international air transport operators may come in for more intense scrutiny in the coming days. A new Government order has empowered the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to intervene and issue appropriate directions to international airlines and operators of air transport services if he is convinced that the operator has established excessive or predatory tariff or has indulged in oligopolistic practices. The latest order requires every international air transport operator to publish the tariffs (includes fares) in their Web site or two daily newspapers. The operator would also be required to display the tariff in a conspicuous part of their office and in the office of their agent, if any. The move, industry insiders said, is aimed at bringing about more transparency in the tariff regime of the industry. However, there is scepticism among the international airline community operating to India on whether the latest rules issued by the Government will achieve the desired results. Senior officials of different international airlines said that the order was not clear on several issues, such as whether the gross or the net fares should be displayed.
