`Right to sight' by 2020

THE International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) has been entrusted an estimated outlay of $2 billion over the next 15 years to ensure that no one is denied the fundamental right to sight.

The newly elected President of IAPB, a charitable organisation registered in the UK, Dr G.N. Rao, said the focus during the next four years of his tenure would be to make significant and measurable progress by implementing sustainable models of eye care delivery targeting the neediest countries.

Dr Rao, founder of the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, will spearhead the IAPB's efforts to eliminate avoidable blindness throughout the world under the well defined initiative of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight, a collaborative programme of IAPB and the World Health Organization.

Vision 2020 has also brought under a coalition, several governments, non-governmental organisation's and corporate partnerswho work together to generate resources, enhance the human resource base and influence public policy, he said in a press release.
