WEST Bengal has received proposals worth Rs 400 crore for investment in food processing for the current financial year, said the Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, at `Food Tech India 2004', an international exhibition organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
In 2003-04, the State attracted 155 such proposals involving a total investment of Rs 327 crore.
The Chief Minister said that the State Government was in talks with HLL and ITC for setting up units in the proposed marine food processing zone near the city.
The State was setting up two agro product research centres at the Kalyani and North Bengal Universities, he added. It is setting up a collection centre at Mongpu in Darjeeling district in collaboration with ICICI Bank for cut-flower and orchid exports. Mr Anup Singh, President of ICC and Director of ITC, said that the State needed to speed up the development of five proposed agri-export zones and create "cold chains" on a war footing.
