Bet on `MEMS' after IT

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Oct. 4

THE micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) is likely to be the next technological forte of India after information technology, according to the Vice-Chancellor of Madurai-Kamaraj University (MKU), Dr P.K. Ponnuswamy.

Presiding over a national-level technical symposium `Asterix 2004' organised by the Computer Centre of the University, the Vice-Chancellor said MEMS consisted of mechanical structures and electrical circuits integrating sensors, electronics and actuators that are required for automation on a common platform.

He drew the attention of IT experts to the growing imbalance between the urban and rural population in accessing IT and suggested that research in the field should concentrate on developing cost-effective and user-friendly methods and systems. There is also the need to develop hardware and associated interfaces for specific applications, he added.
