Regulator problem

Responding to the complaint of BSNL against Reliance Infocomm for having diverted international calls to local lines to save on payments, the TRAI Chief had said that he was only a Regulator and not a policeman.

The RBI, SEBI and the IRDA are all regulators. And yet, the RBI imposed a moratorium on the functioning of Global Trust Bank. SEBI brought to book many erring brokers in the capital market and prevented them from trading for a prescribed period. The IRDA forced a few insurance products to be withdrawn. And yet, all of them acted as regulators.

One is compelled to think that the TRAI chief's plea of helplessness is not innocent and that it has deeper undertones.
