Mangalore , Oct. 5

IMPROVEMENTS in information and systems integration have a significant impact on military operations by providing decision makers with accurate and timely information, according to Dr V.K. Saraswat, Programme Director, Defence Research and Development Organsiation (DRDO), Hyderabad.

He was delivering the ninth Corporation Bank Endowment Lecture on Information technology in `Defence: Challenges and opportunities', at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) at Surathkal in Mangalore on Tuesday.

Information technology (IT), he said, improves the ability to see, prioritise, assign and assess information.

Stating that advancements in IT lead to advancements in the "art of war", Dr Saraswat said that planners will have incredible amount of information about their target State by 2010.

According to him, the timely establishment of communication network connectivity is vital to the success and survival of military forces in the modern warfare environment.

Effective and responsive decision-making becomes impossible without adequate and reliable local and long-haul communication systems both within and outside the battle space, he said.

The network-centric warfare operations require the application of information and simulation technologies for the combatant to function in a knowledge-centric universe that integrates ground, sea, and air and space information, he explained.

New methods of war gaming must be developed with the goal of simulating victory and expediting it, and with fewer casualties and less collateral damage, he added.

The Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank, Mr Cherian Varghese, who presided over the function, said that information technology is playing a prominent role in banking operations.

The Director of NITK, Prof S.S. Murthy, was also present.
