Corporates look to gyms for `flab' shedding

Latha Venkatraman

Mumbai , Oct. 5

CORPORATES are looking to farm out their employee fitness programme. Reliance Infocomm has taken the lead by tying up with Gold's Gym, the largest Gym chain in the world.

Gold's Gym sees opportunity and merit in entering into corporate gym management.

It is in talks with more companies including Dell, Compaq, Microsoft, Infosys and Wipro for gym management alliances.

``Corporates have been setting up gyms within their office space. But due to lack of management of these initiatives, the equipment ends up in a state of disrepair,'' said Mr G. Ramachandran, Director, Gold's Gym.

According to him, this is a virtually untouched business and promises to be a sustainable revenue earner.

At Reliance's Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City, employees have responded enthusiastically to the outsourced gym expertise. Golds Gym has set up a facility inside the Reliance premises.

``We have about 9,000 people working here on a 24x7 basis, including a lot of youngsters. We felt that we needed to give recreational and fitness support to the employees,'' said Mr Jimmy Mogal, Head - Corporate Communication, Reliance Infocomm.

The morning and evening hours at the gym are completely occupied by employees, he said outlining the magnitude of response.

Gold's Gym made its India foray by putting up two gyms in Mumbai.

The Indian arm is a franchisee of the parent overseeing operations in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives.

It now plans to set up two more gyms in Mumbai, two gyms in Chennai and one each in Delhi and Kolkata by the end of this year.

``By March 2005, we hope to have 10 gyms and by the end of 2005 we should have in place 18-20 such facilities,'' said Mr Ramachandran.

The setting up of corporate gym services provides incremental revenue at little additional cost.

Recently, Gold's Gym and Gympac, the sole distributor in India for the world's leading fitness equipment manufacturer Precor, USA, entered into a strategic business alliance for the management of Indian corporate gyms.

Gold's Gym would manage the entire fitness centre and Gympac would offer the appropriate equipment for the facility. Gold's Gym deploys trainers for the corporate fitness programme.
