AP: `Red carpet' for Naxal leaders

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , Oct. 5

THE very use of `N' word (Naxalite) used to be a red rag for the Government in general and the police in particular till five months ago.

In a dramatic turn of events since the Congress Government took over reins in May, the State has assured safe passage for the five Naxalite leaders, three from the CPI (ML) (People's War) and two from CPI (ML) (Janashakti), when they turn up for the talks on October 15.

"Why, we would give them a red carpet welcome," a top Government official told Business Line.

Mr K. Jana Reddy, Home Minister, had already announced that the Government would provide them (the Naxal leaders) safe passage.

The Naxalite representatives demanded on Tuesday that the PW-Janashakti delegates be given complete security, while ensuring safe passage.

Responding to this, the Government said security cover would be given to the Naxal leaders once they surfaced for the October 11 meet at Guttikonda Bilam (Guntur district).

After inaugurating a memorial column there, the leaders would go to Pagideru (Khammam) to address a meeting planned by Janashakti, before proceeding to the talks in Hyderabad on October 15.
