1 m families to come under health scheme

G. Gurumuthy

Coimbatore , Oct. 5

THE Union Health Minister, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, has said that the Central Government aims to cover one million below-poverty-line families during the current year under the universal health scheme which provides health insurance to these families.

The Union Minister conceded that penetration of health insurance is yet to make an impact; the Government found the coverage of below-poverty-line families under health insurance not satisfactory. Last year, only 9,000 families were covered under the universal health scheme.

Dr Anbumani, who was here to attend an orthopaedic conference organised by the Kovai Medical Centre and Hospitals, said the priority of his Ministry was to extend rural health cover and as part of this, his Government would launch the population stabilisation programme. The ministry will involve the medical fraternity in the private sector in this programme who will be identified with the help of the Indian Medical Association.

In a brief chat with newsmen, the Union Minister stressed on the need to revamp medical education to give a rural orientation and focus on R&D. The curriculum must address local needs effectively.

To meet this, steps were being taken to amend the Medical Council of India Act, said Dr Anbumani.

Earlier, inaugurating the joint replacement centre of the Kovai Medical Centre and Hospitals, Dr Anbumani said there was not adequate awareness about road accidents, mental illness and cancer among the public. The health ministry wants to open more trauma care centres with private participation. It is in discussion with the surface transport ministry in this regard.
