Uphill task

This is with refers to "National Manufacturing Competitive Council - Taking on an uphill task" (Business Line, October 6).

It is deplorable that India was ranked among the last dozen countries on the competitiveness of 102 countries, in spite of her third rank in availability of engineers and scientists and eight in quality of management schools.

It signals the urgent need to bring the academic knowledge and technologies to the field to meet the market demands.

It is also important that the role of the Government has not withered away in the market-led economy.

The factors such as freedom of press, transparency, balancing regional disparities and so on which are sine quo non for healthy competitiveness should be established by the State rather than delegating them to other agencies/institutions such as the NMCC.
