THE Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) plans to introduce advertising awards for African and Asian agencies next year, coinciding with the body's diamond jubilee celebrations.

The event, which could become a regular feature, is just one of the many ways by which the association plans to boost its finances, said Mr Srinivasan K. Swamy, Chief Executive Officer, RK Swamy BBDO, who recently took over as AAAI President.

AAAI is also toying with the idea of either holding a convention or organising an art festival, which will see participation from Asian and African countries.

"We want to improve the professional standards of the industry as well as the financial strength of the association," said Mr Swamy. It currently has a corpus of around Rs 50 lakh, he said, and wants to increase it to about Rs 5 crore in a couple of years.

"We are going to try and add to our bottomlines. We still operate out of a 1,000 sq. ft. office, but we plan to build a campus in the future and also get quality people who can serve the industry."

The art festival or the convention, which is likely to be staged in Goa, will "culminate with the Afro-Asian Advertising Awards," said Mr Swamy.

The awards committee will be headed by Mr Piyush Pandey, Executive Chairman, Ogilvy & Mather.

To improve the professional standards in the industry and help smaller agencies run more profitably, the association is planning a series of seminars and workshops initially in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

AAAI also looks to extend its ongoing creative workshop in Mumbai, The Block, to other major cities.
