THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Air Intelligence Unit of Central Excise and Customs announced the seizure of 306 semi-precious stones worth over Rs 50 lakh from a person alighting from a SriLankan Airlines flight here on Tuesday.

The stones were cleverly concealed in tea packets, an official quoted the Mr R.K. Jain, Commissioner of Central Excise and Customs, as saying. The passenger, who hails from Kayalpattanam in Tamil Nadu, was arrested and has been sent to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Customs officers at the Air Cargo Complex here on Tuesday made another seizure of electronic spare parts valued at nearly Rs 30 lakh. These were imported as `unaccompanied baggage' and comprised 578 load cells used as spare parts for weighing balance.
