Global meet on eco-friendly products in February

Thiruvananthapuram , Oct. 7

THE Swadeshi Science Movement (SSM) is proposing to hold `Prithvi 2005, the Global Eco Meet' that envisages a global convergence of eco-friendly products, technology and initiatives from 60 countries.

Thiruvananthapuram will host the international conference that aims to evolve new partnerships for sustainable development by bringing together diverse players such as academicians, researchers, policymakers, producers, consumers and communicators, according to a spokesman of SSM.

Various national and international agencies, Government departments, scientific institutions and private and public enterprises will associate themselves with SSM in the conduct of the 10-day-long conference starting from February 19, 2005.

The proceedings will be staged at diverse venues in the city, and will include a series of international seminars and an international exhibition. There will also be a business meet on eco-friendly products. It is expected that 2,500 delegates will attend the various seminars and 600 institutions and firms will take part in the exhibition. The organisers are expecting some three lakh visitors to the exhibition venues.

Explaining the context of the conference, the SSM spokesman said that mankind has drifted from a lifestyle in tune with nature to one that is damaging life support systems. Eco-sensitive efforts from the world over offer the only hope in an otherwise bleak scenario. New lifestyles, new products and new technologies have emerged. Healthy traditions are being reinvented. However, there isa need to consolidate these efforts.

Among Prithvi 2005's major themes are: eco-friendly lifestyles, environmental ethics, eco-friendly traditions, policies and perspectives; non-conventional energy, renewables, energy efficiency and conservation; sustainable agriculture; sustainable land use and waste management; water conservation and management; eco-friendly habitat; food, health and green pharmacy; environment-friendly transportation and eco-tourism.
