`Restore spices import permits'

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The former State Minister for Water Resources, Mr T. M. Jacob, has demanded that the Centre restore the permit system for importing spices.

Mr Jacob said the notification issued by the Commerce Ministry scrapping the permit system would lead to dumping of imported spices and a crash of the domestic market. The permit system allowed for a controlled import regime, which would go a long way in pre-empting a glut situation.

Even with a permit system in place, the country had to resort to imports of 58,000 tonnes of pepper during the last year. Scrapping of the limit would only result in uncontrolled imports, Mr Jacob said.
