Events Air India, IAF to take part in air show on Oct 17 Our Bureau
Mumbai , Oct. 7 FOR the first time ever, Air India and the Indian Air Force will come together to participate in an air-show that will be held here on October 17. The air show will be part of an Air Awareness Campaign to be organised in the city between October 14 and 17. The awareness campaign will mark the birth centenary of J.R.D Tata who pioneered civil aviation in the country. It will also mark the 50th year of Air Marshall Subroto Mukherjee taking charge as the first Indian Chief of Air Staff. Air Marshal S.K. Jain, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of South Western Air Command, told presspersons here on Thursday that it would be the first time that civilian craft from Air-India will fly along with fighter aircraft from the IAF. As per plans, a Boeing 747-400 from the Air-India fleet will fly at an altitude of just 1,000 feet and will be escorted by two Su-30 fighter aircraft. The aircraft will fly past over Marine Drive, along the city's coastline. According to Air Marshall Jain, the Air Force will work along with the Mumbai Municipal Corporation to ensure the smooth conduct of the event. The air show will include a mock combat between two MiG and Sukhoi-30 aircraft, besides an aerobatics display by the Suryakiran Team, a para-dropping display by the Akashganga team, and the mid-air refuelling of two Su-30s by IL-78 Flight Refueller Aircraft. A recruitment drive will also be held at the end of the campaign. According to Air Marshall Jain there are currently 11,000 vacancies, in a variety of positions, in the IAF. Mumbaikars will also have the opportunity to witness an open-air concert by the Air Warriors Symphony Orchestra to be held at the Brabourne Stadium on October 14. A Static Display at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Sahar, on October 14 and 15, will showcase fighter aircraft such as the Jaguar, MiG-29, Mirage-2000, MiG-21, MiG-27, and the SU-30 as well as helicopters, missiles, and mobile radars. Air India will also put on display a Boeing 747-400 from its fleet.
