Hyderabad , Oct. 7

MS Praveena, a Content Analyst at Deloitte Consulting, Hyderabad, takes a fistful of rice every morning and keeps in a can. Many of her colleagues too are cultivating the habit to join the company's `A Fistful of Rice' campaign on the Impact Day.

Cans of rice thus collected would be distributed among the poor farmers in the remote districts of the State.

The rice campaign is part of Deloitte's Global Impact Day on Friday where 1.20 lakh employees would contribute their mite in over 177 countries. The annual campaign is held on October 8. This year the rice campaign would be taken up at Nizamabad and Mangol village in Medak district. "The idea is to make a difference in the lives of the poor," a Deloitte executive told Business Line.

In Andhra Pradesh, about 1,000 employees would take part in these programmes. "It is part of workplace volunteering.

To make it really a committed effort, community service programmes are being taken up on a work day," he said. The programmes slated for the Impact Day were varied from road safety to school development.

Deloitte Against Road Rage looked at improving road sense by launching campaign at various traffic junctions and rewarding the commuters who respected traffic rules. In the Greener Hyderabad campaign, the employees would plant saplings.

At the Gowlipada Primary School, three kilometres away from Indian School of Business, the volunteers would improve the look of the school by painting the classrooms and cleaning the premises. For its campaign against child labour, Deloitte roped in MV Foundation, a non-governmental organisation.

"A mock UN Assembly will be conducted at the AP Assembly Hall with 100 children representing different countries," the executive said.

Before fanning out to different destinations, the volunteers would gather at company's office in the morning. Ms Shanta Sinha of MV Foundation and Magasasay Award winner would flag off the campaign.
