TN: Chamber's plea on direct train services

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tuticorin, has appealed to the Centre to introduce trains between Tuticorin and Mangalore and Coimbatore.

According to the Chamber President, Mr D.R. Kodeeswaran, with no direct train in operation, the old and the physically challenged entrepreneurs found it difficult to commute between the cities and a majority of small-scale entrepreneurs have to rely on buses. Direct train services will help increase both passenger and goods traffic in the sector.

An inter-city train between Tuticorin and Madurai would be of immense help to businessmen to board North-bound long distance trains and the litigants to attend cases at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

The Railway's decision to increase the running time of the Pearl City Express between Tuticorin and Chennai Egmore by over 30 minutes has annoyed passengers and businessmen, he added.
