Software TN mulls knowledge sharing pact with Dubai in IT sector Vimala Vasan
Mr D. Jayakumar
Abu Dhabi , Oct. 8 TAMIL NADU is looking at entering into a knowledge sharing agreement with Dubai in the IT sector and is also keen to attract investment in its fast developing IT corridor, the State's Minister for IT and Law, Mr D. Jayakumar, has said. Mr Jayakumar, who led a high level delegation to the Gitex 2004 expo held in Dubai, told Business Line that the visit had given rise to a number of avenues for greater knowledge sharing in the field of IT between Tamil Nadu and the Dubai emirate, in view of the tremendous developments that have taken place in the emirate. "We have presented details of our IT policy and the scope that investors have in this sector in Tamil Nadu. Quick sanctioning of proposals through a single window agency, subsidies and other kinds of incentives are part of the IT policy," he said. The State is targeting to double its software exports, which had been rising at a quick pace in the past few years, he added. Mr Jayakumar indicated that a delegation from Dubai is likely to visit Tamil Nadu to follow up on discussions held during the current visit. They will meet the Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, and possibly sign a memorandum of understanding for co-operation in the IT sector. The Minister said that there is great scope for investment in the Chennai's knowledge industry township where a large number of premier companies are setting up base. The township is expected to generate employment for two lakh people in two years. Referring to the large international presence in Gitex and the high quality of the exhibition, Mr Jayakumar said that the TN delegation had obtained a lot of ideas from the visit, which they will put to good use in future IT events in the State. "We are looking at increasing the scale of the next edition of Connect that has been held successfully in Tamil Nadu into a mega event, and attract greater international participation," he said. Members of the Tamil community at a reception held in Abu Dhabi urged Mr Jayakumar to provide more incentives for NRIs from the State like a single window agency and a special department for NRI affairs. The issue of high fares charged by Indian carriers on the Gulf-Tamil Nadu sector was also raised by them.
