Alternative Medicines Body for developing indigenous medical systems urged Our Bureau
New Delhi , Oct. 8 THE Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has mooted the proposal for creation of a national board for development of indigenous medicinal systems to offer a basket of medical services in areas such as yoga, meditation and ayurveda to help the country promote its traditional healthcare medical tourism. This, according to the chamber, can generate an annual revenue to the tune of Rs 15,000 crore by 2015. The suggested board should become operational through a special budgetary allocation of Rs 500 crore in the budget for fiscal 2005-06 under the chairmanship of the Union Health Minister. The chief ministers of states that are inclined to undertake traditional medicinal system should be made its patron members, says Assocham. The study conducted by the chamber which was released here by its President, Mr Mahendra K. Sanghi, reveals that the demand for Indian ancient medicinal services is growing manifold world-wide in the aforesaid areas for which overseas treatment is hardly available and patients all over the world are looking towards India to cure diseases. According to Assocham's estimates, by the end of 2003-04, India roughly attracted about 2 lakh patients from various parts of the world for treatment, of which roughly 30,000 patients were looking at Indian traditional medicinal methods. As per the findings, the States that served them the most include Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
