Channels and Franchises Wilson to market nanotech-based sports equipment Our Bureau
New Delhi , Oct. 9 FINLAND-BASED Amer Sports, which owns the Wilson brand of sports equipment, will market its nanotechnology-based tennis and badminton rackets as well as golf accessories offering extra strength, stability and power to their products, in India. "Nanotechnology in sporting equipment plays the role of bonding agent which exudes twice the strength, stability and 22 per cent more power," Wilson Asia Pacific Marketing Director, Mr Paul Gibbons, said unveiling the new range of products. Wilson products are marketed in India by Planet Sports Pvt Ltd through an exclusive marketing and distribution tie-up. While the tennis and badminton rackets will be available in India by December this year, the golf equipment will be available in January 2005, said the Planet Sports Sales Manager, Mr R. Harish Iyar. All the nanotechnology-based products will be priced at around 20-25 per cent higher than non-nanotech-based products, said Mr Iyar. "The nanotechnology-based tennis rackets, branded nCode, would be available between the price range of Rs 7,000 and Rs 12,000. The nanotech-based badminton rackets will cost between Rs 2800 and Rs 3700," he added. The nanotech-based products are targeted at the high-end customers of the usual Wilson product range. Around 13 per cent of Wilson products total users in India constitute the high-end segment. The Indian market for golf and rackets is growing at around 20-25 per cent on an annual basis. At present, Wilsons' total retail sales in the country are at around $300 million, according to Mr Iyar. The `nCode' badminton and tennis rackets are better than the traditional sports good designs as the nanotechnology acts as a filler to overcome the stress points which are created due to voids existing between the individual fibres in the equipment.
