New Delhi , Oct. 9

THE All India Drugs Control Officers' Confederation (AIDCOC) has called for the need to create independent drugs control organisation in each State headed by technically qualified people.

It has also called for the need to appoint more drug inspectors in order to bridge the gap between required number of drug inspectors and those available. "India still needs 1,741 drug inspectors as against available 899 drug inspectors," the confederation said in a press statement.

AIDCOC, a confederation of State Drugs Control Officers' Associations, was set up to provide a national platform to the drug control officers in India.

"According to the Government of India data based on 1991 figures, the Drugs Control Organisation in India requires 3,000 drugs inspectors as against 703 drugs inspectors available. During the past 14 years, the number of manufacturers and selling outlets has increased substantially. However, the number of drug inspectors has gone up marginally to 899," it said in a press note.

The apex body would be holding its annual convention here on October 10, which would be organised by the Delhi Administration Drugs Control Gazetted Officers' Association.
