Alliances & Joint Ventures C-DAC, IIT Bombay team up for Open Source Software centre L.N. Revathy
Coimbatore , Oct. 9 THE Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), IIT Bombay and IBM India have signed a co-operation agreement for kick starting an Open Source Software Resource Centre (OSSRC) on an investment of over Rs 5 crore. This OSSRC is expected to mark the beginning of series of initiatives to develop OSS activities in the country, with the partners agreeing to undertake activities to foster OSS development, enhance the understanding of OSS model by imparting quality training and promoting content development in areas of education and general awareness of OSS across the country. Sources told Business Line that the other academic and research institutes would partake in this endeavour after establishing the present framework with C-DAC and IIT Bombay. Mr Ramakrishnan, Director General, C-DAC said that the acceptance of the OSS-based solutions and standards would provide the ideal opportunity for countries to develop new players and products with minimal investments. " IBM would provide the hardware and software resources, management support and the overall support, besides participating in the implementation of OSSRC. C-DAC would focus on setting up the necessary laboratory and development of skill sets, which included physical infrastructure, Indian language technologies and frameworks for OSS development; while IIT Bombay would direct the efforts in channelising the education sector including teacher training and content development on OS platforms. An advisory board consisting of representatives from Department of Information Technology, IBM, C-DAC and IIT, apart from a few eminent academic and industry representatives, is to be constituted to review the project activities and progress.
