Events Shopping festival kicks off in Kolkata Our Bureau
Kolkata , Oct. 10 THE Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry, in association with Coca-Cola and other sponsors, today flagged off the Kolkata Shopping Festival, modelled along the lines of international shopping festivals, ahead of the Durga Puja festivities. As part of the event, a special `Privileges Card' has been launched for all shoppers. Aimed at improving the image of the city as a retail hub, and to encourage healthy networking of trading outlets to ensure value for money proposition to customers, the chamber has also has roped in Inox (multiplex outlet) and The Telegraph as partners. The specially designed `Privileges Card', priced at Rs 60, contains hefty discount coupons on food (at designated restaurants), beverages (Coke and Georgia Coffee at retail outlets), and desserts, and comes with mega prizes lucky draw coupon. The bumper prize is a Chevrolet Tavera car. Among the sponsors of other prizes are Pantaloon, Air Sahara, Samsung and West Bengal Tourism (which would offer a free one night-two day Sunderbans package tour). The festival is on till October 19. Speaking to Business Line at the launch ceremony, Mr Navin Suchanti, Convenor, and Committee Member of the chamber, said that a special group headed by Mr Aniruddha Lahiri, Vice-President of the chamber, and representatives of the Federation of Trade Organisations, West Bengal, has been working on various themes to spruce up the image of the city. The shopping festival is a direct result of this exercise. It will cover some 2.5 lakh shopping outlets, including those in the shopping malls, who are all members of the federation. Depending on the success of the first such event in city, the festival could even be held twice in a year, he added. He placed the initial costs for putting up the show at Rs 40 lakh.
