Taxi strike plan dropped Kerala operators

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Taxi and autorickshaw operators have decided to drop the plan to go on strike from October 11, following a discussion with the Transport Minister, Mr N. Sakthan, here on Saturday.

The Minister assured the fleet operators that the Government would "sympathetically consider" their demand for a fare hike, an official said. He has asked them to wait for the decision till he consulted the Chief Minister on the issue.

The convener of the State Motor Workers' Coordination Committee, Mr Elamaram Karim, said the trade unions and the Government had come to an understanding on the issue of increasing the taxi and autorickshaw fares.

Philately festival tomorrow

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Posts will organise a philately festival for students from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan, Nathencode, as part of the celebrations of 150 years of India Post.

A display of stamps and competitions in spot painting and letter writing and a treasure hunt will be conducted, a spokesman said here.

BL Club at Marthandam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Change is the only constant in the era of LPG (liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation), said Dr M. K. Ramachandran Nair, Vice-Chancellor, Kerala University.

He was delivering the valedictory address at the inauguration of the Business Line Club at the Department of Management Studies with the Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam, near here.

Competence, knowledge and competitiveness will help a management student keep pace with the change. The core strength will lie in knowing and nurturing one's competency. Books and periodicals will help him achieve this, Dr Nair said. The programme marked the end of the two-day management meet, Gleams-04, organised by the Department of Management Studies.
