German co enters Indian hearing protection market

Chennai , Oct. 11

GERMAN maker of ear moulds, egger Otoplastik+Labortechnik GmbH, , has begun to supply Indian companies technology and raw materials to make moulds for hearing aids and protection.

egger has tied up with Chennai-based Electro NICS to jointly supply technology and materials to Indian manufacturers. The companies announced that their aim is to do business in ear mould making with four companies in the four metros by end 2005.

The companies have started the process through a tie-up with Eljay Agencies in Chennai. Last week, Eljay opened a dedicated Egger Lab. Electro's head, Mr Mahesh N. Nichani, told Business Line that his company helped establish the lab, and will supply raw materials. He added that egger had trained Electro's employees.

Mr Nichani said a unique feature of the link with egger was that they aimed to tap a virgin market for hearing protection equipment. He identified heavy industries such as fertiliser plants and textile industries as areas with a latent demand for hearing protection equipment.

Mr Nichani said about 5 per cent of the Indian population is hearing impaired. He estimated that about 10 per cent of the hearing impaired used hearing aids.
