Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Oct. 11

SMALL-SCALE Industries (SSIs), consuming and handling Carbontetrachloride (CTC) and Hydrochlorofluoro Carbons (HCFCs) in the State have to register with the Small Industries Service Institute (SISI), Hyderabad. This is inline with the `Ozone depleting substances (regulation & control), amendment rules, 2004'.

The registration is essential in order to provide financial and technical assistance to those enterprises which desire to change over from the use of CTCs to non-ODS (ozone depleting substitutes). The last date for registration is December 31, 2004, after which no unit would be allowed to use CTC and HCFCs, The SISI, Deputy Director, Mr D. Chandrasekhar, said in a press release

The Indian Government is a signatory to the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete ozone layer. As per the provisions of the Protocol, technical and financial assistance is available to the developing countries to phase out the ODS and adopt ozone friendly technologies.

In order to facilitate developed and developing countries phase out ozone depleting substances, different time frames have been agreed to under the Montreal Protocol. Several Indian research institutes have been working on developing such substitutes.

The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), for example has with support from Navin Fluorocarbons and Mafatlal Group has developed substitutes for HFC 134A .

The SISI has announced that it would provide the necessary details and help to SSI in this regard. Details could be had at hyd _sisihyd1@sancharnet.net. in.
